Engine Cam Phase Sensor (Timing Position Sensor)
This sensor is a key input for modern ECU-controlled engines. It tells the engine computer the exact camshaft phase, so fuel injection and ignition happen at the right moment. When timing data is accurate, the engine starts faster, idles smoother, and delivers better power and fuel economy ?βοΈ.
Why this part is needed
Without a clean cam phase signal, the ECU cannot properly match valve timing with crank rotation. On many vehicles, this signal is also used to control variable valve timing (VVT), helping the engine breathe efficiently at low and high RPM.
How it works
The sensor reads a trigger wheel/target on the camshaft and produces a digital pulse. The ECU compares this pulse to the crankshaft signal to identify which cylinder is on compression stroke, then adjusts injection, spark, and VVT operation in real time ?.
What happens if itβs broken
- Hard start or no-start condition
- Rough idle, hesitation, misfires
- Loss of power and poor fuel economy
- Check Engine Light and stored timing correlation codes
- Transmission may shift oddly on some setups due to wrong load data
Compatibility
- Outlander<Phev>
