Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor
This sensor is a key input for the Toyota engine control system. It tells the ECU the exact crankshaft speed and position, so fuel injection and ignition timing happen at the right moment. Without a clean crank signal, even a strong engine can run rough or refuse to start.

Modern Toyota engines rely on precise timing data to start quickly, idle smoothly, and deliver proper power. This sensor provides the “engine heartbeat” signal used for spark control, injector pulse timing, and misfire detection.
How it works ⚙️
The tip reads a rotating trigger wheel on the crankshaft. As teeth pass by, it generates a pulsed signal. The ECU counts these pulses to calculate RPM and identifies reference gaps to know exact crank position. That information keeps combustion synchronized under all loads.
What happens if it’s broken ?
A failing sensor may cause no-start, random stalling when hot, hesitation, loss of power, or a check engine light. In some cases the ECU enters limp mode, fuel economy drops, and misfires can damage the catalytic converter over time.
