Engine Oxygen Sensor Assembly (Upstream O2)
This sensor is a key part of the fuel control system. It measures how much oxygen is left in the exhaust stream, then sends a fast signal to the ECU. The ECU uses this data to correct air/fuel ratio in real time, keeping power smooth, emissions low, and fuel use under control ⚙️.
Why this part is needed
Modern engines must run close to the ideal mixture. A healthy O2 sensor helps the ECU fine-tune injection and ignition adjustments, especially during warm running, cruising, and light acceleration.
How it works
Inside the sensor is a heated element that reaches operating temperature quickly. As exhaust oxygen changes, voltage/resistance changes too. The ECU reads these changes and trims fuel delivery, preventing rich or lean running.
What happens if it’s broken
- Check Engine light and stored mixture-related fault codes
- Higher fuel consumption and fuel smell from exhaust
- Rough idle, hesitation, or weak response
- Possible catalytic converter overload over time ?
