This sensor is needed to help the engine computer measure how much air enters the intake. With correct airflow data, the ECU can calculate the right fuel amount, keep idle stable, improve throttle response, and protect the catalytic converter. Itβs a key part for clean, efficient combustion.
How It Works
Inside the unit, a heated sensing element sits in the air stream. As air passes, it cools the element. The electronics convert that cooling effect into a signal the ECU understands. The ECU then adjusts injector pulse and ignition strategy to match real-time airflow, especially during acceleration and load changes.
When Itβs Faulty
A failing sensor can cause rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, black smoke, hard starting, and loss of power. In many cases the ECU goes into a backup mode, triggering a check engine light and making the car feel sluggish. Long-term driving with wrong airflow readings can foul spark plugs and damage the catalyst.
Best Practice
Use clean air filtration and avoid oiled filters that can contaminate the sensing wire. Ensure the intake has no cracks or unmetered air leaks after installation.
