Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT)

Why you need it

Without accurate coolant temp data, the ECU is “blind.” The engine may run too rich or too lean, waste fuel, and overheat. A healthy sensor protects the head gasket, catalytic converter, and wallet.

How it works

Inside is a thermistor (usually NTC). As coolant warms, resistance drops. The ECU sends a 5V reference, reads the return signal, and calculates exact temperature. The threaded tip sits in the coolant passage; the connector sends a clean signal to the ECU.

What happens if it breaks ⚠️

Common signs: hard cold starts, rough idle, poor mileage, weak heater control, fan stuck on/off, limp mode, and Check Engine Light (codes like P0115–P0119). Ignoring it can cause overheating and costly damage.
