Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Assembly
This sensor is fitted in the exhaust stream to watch heat levels in real time. It is needed to protect the catalytic converter and help the ECU keep emissions and fuel control stable. When exhaust temperature rises too high, the ECU can adjust fueling and timing to prevent damage and keep the engine running clean.
How It Works βοΈ
The sensing tip sits in hot exhaust flow and changes its electrical signal as temperature changes. The engine computer reads this signal and uses it to manage closed-loop strategies, catalyst protection, and safe operating limits during hard driving, towing, or long uphill loads.
Signs of Failure & What Can Happen
- Check Engine Light and stored temperature-related fault codes
- Poor fuel economy or irregular throttle response
- Reduced power / limp mode to protect the exhaust system
- Overheating catalyst risk, leading to expensive exhaust repairs
If the sensor is broken or drifting, the ECU may run too rich or too lean as a safety guess. That can raise emissions, increase fuel use, and in worst cases overheat the catalyst or turbo system (where fitted).
