Essential Component for Efficient Engine Performance
The ignition coil is a critical element in your vehicle's ignition system, tasked with transforming the low voltage from your car's battery into the thousands of volts needed to create a spark in the spark plugs. Without this transformation, your engine would not be able to ignite the fuel-air mixture necessary for combustion, leaving your vehicle powerless.
How It Works ⚙️
The ignition coil operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It consists of two coils of wire—primary and secondary—wound around a core. When the ignition switch is turned on, the battery supplies current to the primary coil. This generates a magnetic field, which collapses when the current is interrupted. The collapse induces a much higher voltage in the secondary coil, which is then sent to the spark plug to ignite the fuel.
Consequences of a Faulty Ignition Coil
If your ignition coil fails or becomes inefficient, several issues can surface, such as misfires, poor fuel economy, decreased power, and in severe cases, inability to start the car. Ignoring these issues can lead to more significant damage over time, such as a damaged catalytic converter due to unburned fuel.
