Essential Ignition Component: Spark Plug

A car's engine relies on many key components to function effectively, and one such essential part is the spark plug. This humble yet crucial component is responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture inside the engine's combustion chambers. A spark plug works by conveying high voltage electricity from the ignition coil at precisely the right moment, creating a spark that starts the combustion process.

How Spark Plugs Function

At its core, a spark plug consists of a central electrode surrounded by a ceramic insulator, with a metal shell that screws into the engine's cylinder head. Electrical energy is transmitted through the central electrode, and when it reaches the tip, a voltage difference is created between the electrode and the ground. This difference causes a spark to jump across the gap, igniting the air-fuel mix.

Signs of a Faulty Spark Plug

If a spark plug is broken or malfunctioning, several signs may manifest. The engine may struggle to start or misfire during acceleration, leading to reduced fuel efficiency and power. Additionally, a faulty spark plug can cause the engine to idle roughly or even stall. In the worst-case scenario, ignoring such symptoms can lead to extensive engine damage.

Why Regular Replacement is Key

Maintaining engine performance and longevity requires regular inspection and replacement of spark plugs. Over time, the electrode wears down, which can increase the gap and weaken the spark. Resulting in incomplete combustion, this can lead to the build-up of harmful deposits within the engine, reduced fuel economy, and increased emissions.
