Engine Cooling Thermostat Assembly 🔧❄️
This cooling control unit is a key part of the Subaru engine temperature system. It is needed to help the engine reach
proper operating heat fast, then keep that heat stable in traffic, cold mornings, or highway driving. A correct running
temperature improves fuel economy, heater performance, and reduces engine wear.
How It Works ⚙️
Inside the housing is a wax-type valve. When coolant is cold, the valve stays closed, forcing coolant to circulate mainly
inside the engine so it warms up quickly. As temperature rises, the wax expands and opens the valve, allowing coolant to
flow to the radiator for heat release. This smooth open/close action prevents sudden temperature swings.
What Happens If It’s Broken 🚨
If stuck closed, coolant can’t reach the radiator, leading to overheating, boiling coolant, warped heads, and possible
head gasket damage. If stuck open, the engine may run too cool, causing weak cabin heat, higher fuel use, rough running,
and faster sludge buildup. Leaks at the seal can also create low coolant and air pockets.
