Why you need it
This valve keeps your Subaru boxer engine at the right temperature so it runs clean, strong, and efficient. It limits coolant flow when cold for quick warm‑up, then meters flow to the radiator as the engine heats up. Proper control prevents overheating, oil thinning, and excess fuel use. ✅
How it works
Inside is a wax‑pellet actuator. As coolant warms, the wax expands and pushes a plunger that lifts the valve. Closed when cold, it opens progressively around operating temp, diverting coolant through the radiator. Precision seating and a molded seal stop leaks, while the bypass path keeps flow stable at idle. 🌡️
If it fails
Stuck closed: temp climbs fast, hard upper hose, boiling sounds, warning light, possible head‑gasket damage. Stuck open: slow warm‑up, poor heater, high fuel use, rough running, code P0128. Leaking or warped: low coolant, hot‑cold swings, deposits in the housing. ⚠️
Tech tips
