How it works ⚙️
Inside is a wax pellet that expands at a set temp (typically around 88–92°C). As it expands, it pushes a valve open to send hot coolant to the radiator. When cold, the valve stays shut, keeping coolant in the block for faster warm-up ❄️.
If the part fails ⚠️
Stuck closed: overheating, boiling coolant, pinging, warped heads. Stuck open: cold running, high fuel use, weak cabin heat, code P0128, rough idle. Leaking gasket: slow warm-up and coolant loss .
