This cooling pump is a key part of the Subaru boxer engine cooling system. It is needed to keep coolant moving through the engine block, cylinder heads, and radiator, so heat is carried away before it can damage gaskets and metal parts. A healthy pump helps the engine reach stable temperature fast and stay there in traffic, on hills, or with A/C running.
How It Works ⚙️
The pump is driven by the engine and spins an internal impeller. As the impeller rotates, it pulls coolant from the radiator side and pushes it through the cooling passages. A sealed bearing supports the shaft, while the mechanical seal prevents leaks. When pressure and flow are correct, the heater works better and temperature stays steady.
Signs of Failure & What Can Happen 🔥
If the pump is worn or broken, coolant flow drops. Common symptoms include coolant leaks from the weep area, grinding noise from the bearing, overheating at idle, weak cabin heat, and fluctuating temperature. Ignoring it can lead to severe overheating, warped heads, blown head gasket, and engine failure.
