Upper Engine Coolant Hose (Radiator to Engine)
This coolant hose is a key link between the radiator and the engineโs cooling passage. It is needed to move hot coolant away from the engine so the radiator can drop the temperature and keep the motor stable in traffic, on highways, and in hot weather.
How it works
When the engine warms up, the thermostat opens and coolant flows through this hose under pressure. The reinforced rubber flexes with engine movement, while the inner liner resists heat, coolant chemicals, and vibration. Proper flow helps prevent boiling, reduces hot spots around the cylinder head, and supports efficient cabin heat.
What happens if itโs damaged โ ๏ธ
Cracks, soft spots, or swelling can cause leaks or a sudden burst. Low coolant leads to overheating, weak heater output, steam from the bay, and possible head gasket failure. A collapsed hose can restrict flow and make the temperature climb fast.
Common signs to replace
- Coolant smell or wet stains near hose ends
- Spongy feel, bulges, or visible splits
- Overheating after a short drive
- White crust around clamps (dried coolant)
