Why you need it
The rotor is the heart of a mechanical ignition. When timing is right, fuel burns fully, giving better power, economy, and lower emissions. A fresh rotor protects the cap and coil, and helps prevent misfire under load.
How it works
Mounted on the distributor shaft, the rotor spins with the engine. Voltage from the coil enters through the center contact, passes through an internal resistor (noise suppression), and jumps from the rotorβs tip to each cap post. This sends spark to the correct plug in firing order, thousands of times per minute. π
If the rotor is worn or broken
- Hard starts or no start, especially when hot
- Rough idle, misfire, hesitation, backfire
- Loss of power and poor fuel economy
- Carbon tracking, melted tip, cracked insulator
- Risk of coil stress and catalytic converter damage
Install tips
Disconnect battery, mark rotor position, remove cap, lift off old rotor, seat the new one fully, refit cap. Pair with a new cap for best results. Keep moisture out and check play in the distributor shaft. π§°
