Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor (MAP)

This sensor is a key input for the engine control unit. It reads the air pressure (vacuum/boost) inside the intake manifold and helps the ECU calculate the correct fuel amount and ignition timing. When you press the throttle, manifold pressure changes instantly; the sensor converts that change into an electrical signal so the engine can respond smoothly ?βš™οΈ.

Why this part is needed

Modern Mitsubishi engines rely on accurate load data. The MAP signal supports stable idle, clean acceleration, and good fuel economy. It also helps protect the engine under heavy load by keeping air-fuel ratios in the safe range.

How it works

Inside the unit is a pressure-sensitive element. As manifold pressure rises or drops, the element changes output voltage. The ECU compares this signal with RPM and temperature data to adjust:

  • Fuel injection pulse width
  • Ignition advance
  • Idle control strategy

What happens if it’s broken

A faulty sensor can cause hard starting, rough idle, hesitation, poor power, rich/lean running, higher fuel use, and an illuminated check engine light. In severe cases the engine may stall at stops or struggle under load, especially when climbing or carrying weight ❗
