Engine Coolant Reserve Tank Cap Assembly ?οΈ
This cooling system cap assembly is needed to seal the coolant reserve/overflow tank and keep the system working at the correct pressure. A tight seal helps the engine maintain stable temperature during traffic, towing, or hot weather, and it also prevents coolant smell and messy leaks in the bay.
How It Works βοΈ
Inside the cap, a pressure/relief design controls vapor and coolant expansion. When coolant heats up, it expands into the reserve tank; as it cools, coolant can be drawn back to support proper circulation. The sealing surfaces stop air from entering, helping reduce foaming and overheating risk.
What Happens If Itβs Broken β
If the cap is cracked, warped, or the seal is weak, the tank may not hold pressure. This can cause coolant loss, bubbling, frequent top-ups, and unstable engine temperature. In severe cases, the engine may overheat, leading to damaged hoses, thermostat issues, or costly head gasket stress.
Technician Tip β
Always check the rubber seal and locking tabs. Replace the cap if you see crusty coolant residue, a loose fit, or recurring low-coolant warnings after refilling.
