Why you need it
During warm-up, the pump needs a steady path for coolant. A healthy bypass keeps flow constant, speeds cabin heat, reduces cavitation, and protects head gasket, pump seals, and aluminum surfacesβespecially when towing, idling long, or off-road. π₯
How it works
With the thermostat closed, coolant circulates through this tube between pump, block, and heater core. Once the thermostat opens, it balances pressure and flow, avoiding aeration and temperature spikes. Bead-rolled ends grip hoses; O-ring seats seal tight; the support tab prevents rubbing failures.
What happens if itβs damaged
Rust pinholes, crushed sections, or cracked joints cause coolant smell, crusty deposits, temp swings, slow warm-up, overheating at idle, gurgling, loss of heater output, and can lead to warped head or a blown gasket.
