This sensor is a key input for the ECU to fine-tune fuel delivery and keep emissions under control. It “sniffs” the oxygen level in the exhaust stream and sends a fast-changing signal so the engine can adjust the air/fuel mix in real time. Modern engines cannot run clean or efficient on fixed fuel maps alone. This unit provides closed-loop correction, helping stable idle, crisp throttle response, and catalyst protection.
How it works ⚙️
A heated sensing element reaches operating temperature quickly, then measures oxygen content in the exhaust. The ECU uses this feedback to add or reduce fuel, keeping combustion near the ideal ratio and helping the catalytic converter do its job.
What happens if it’s broken ❌
When the sensor becomes slow, contaminated, or fails electrically, the ECU may default to open-loop fueling. You can see a check engine light, higher fuel use, rough running, hesitation, failed emissions test, and possible catalyst damage over time.
