This compact oil screen guards the variable valve timing and lift system by trapping fine debris before it reaches the spool valve and cam phaser. Clean oil flow here equals smooth timing changes, crisp power delivery, and longer engine life. Built with a fine micromesh and sturdy housing, itβs a small part with a big job.
Why your engine needs it β
Variable systems rely on precise oil pressure. Any grit can stick the spool valve, delay cam advance, and dull performance. This screen filters the gallery feeding the solenoid, protecting costly actuators and keeping fuel use in check.
How it works βοΈ
Mounted in the head near the oil control solenoid, it strains oil as it moves to the valve body. The mesh stops sludge and metal flakes while allowing high flow. An O-ring seals the passage to maintain stable pressure under all RPM.
What happens if itβs bad β οΈ
Clogged or torn screens cause rough idle, weak acceleration, late VTEC engagement, higher consumption, and warning lights (common codes P2646/P0011). You may hear timing rattle on cold starts. Left alone, it can wear the phaser or solenoid.
Tech tip
Replace with fresh oil and filter, clean the seat, and torque the fasteners evenly. If the old mesh shows sludge, inspect the solenoid and change oil more often.
