This exhaust-side camshaft assembly is a precision engine timing part that controls when the exhaust valves open and close. It is needed to keep combustion stable, protect fuel economy, and help the engine breathe correctly under load.
How It Works ⚙️
The camshaft is driven by the timing chain/belt and rotates in sync with the crankshaft. Its machined lobes press on valve lifters/rockers, opening the exhaust valves at the exact moment burned gases must exit the cylinder. Correct lobe shape and journal clearance ensure quiet operation, proper cylinder scavenging, and consistent idle.
Why Replacement Matters ✅
Over time, poor oil quality, low oil pressure, or contamination can wear the lobes and bearing journals. When the surface hardening is damaged, the cam can lose lift and timing accuracy, reducing engine efficiency.
If It’s Worn or Broken ?
You may notice tapping noise, misfire, rough idle, weak acceleration, higher fuel use, and increased emissions. Severe failure can cause valve timing errors that may lead to valve-to-piston contact and major engine damage.
