What it is
This is the shimless bucket tappet that sits between the camshaft lobe and the valve stem. Built from heatβtreated alloy steel with a mirror finish, it holds the exact clearance that the valve train needs to run quiet, clean, and strong.
Why you need it β
Proper valve lash keeps timing accurate, preserves compression, and protects cams and valves. Fresh lifters restore smooth idle, better throttle response, improved fuel economy, and lower emissions. Ideal when doing a head service, cam swap, or chasing topβend noise.
How it works βοΈ
The bucketβs precise height sets the gap between cam and valve. A thin oil film lubricates the contact while the bucketβs slight rotation distributes load, cutting friction and wear. Shimless design means stable clearance at high RPM and no hydraulic pumpβup.
If itβs worn or out of spec
Too much lash: cold/warm ticking, reduced lift, lazy acceleration, higher fuel use. Too little lash: rough idle, hot misfire, low compression, burnt valves, and cam lobe scuffing. Severe wear can shed metal and damage guides and the cam.
Tech tips οΈ
Measure with feeler gauges on the camβs base circle, select the exact bucket height, oil the surfaces, keep parts in order, torque cam caps to spec, then recheck after heat cycling. Always work clean to protect the hardened surfaces.
