How it works

Counterweights on the shaft spin at twice crank speed in the opposite phase. A chain or gear drive turns it, while pressurized oil feeds its journals. The result is balanced forces, lower NVH, and cleaner power delivery. Factory tolerances are tight, so correct phasing and torque are crucial.

When it fails

Expect harsh vibration, rattling at idle, droning at 2–3k rpm, and increased cabin noise. Misphased timing causes rough running. Bearing wear brings metallic shavings in oil and whine. If it seizes, the drive can snap, harming the oil pump or timing set.

Tech tips
