How it works

Mounted on the camshaft, the toothed pulley is driven by a timing belt (or mates with a chain sprocket design). Precise tooth pitch and offset maintain spec’d timing; on VVT setups it allows the actuator to advance/retard the cam via oil pressure while the pulley keeps drive engagement. The center bore and dowel index the cam; the bolt clamps it solidly.

When it fails ❗

Expect rattling/chirping, rough idle, loss of power, misfire codes, hard starting, and metal dust near the cover. Severe wear can let timing skip, causing no-start and possible bent valves.

Replacement tips
