Engine Timing Crank Pulley โ€” Precision Sync for Your Toyota โš™๏ธ

This toothed pulley mounts on the crankshaft nose and keeps camshafts in perfect step through the timing belt. Made from hardened steel, it uses a keyed hub and center bolt to lock position. Accurate pitch and clean timing marks help set true TDC during service.

Why it is needed

Correct valve timing delivers smooth idle, strong pull, and safe combustion. The pulley transfers crank rotation to the belt with zero slip, so spark and fuel events happen exactly when the pistons arrive. It also softens small torsional shocks that can fatigue a belt at high RPM.

How it works

Sharp, even teeth mesh with the belt. The keyway prevents rotation on the crank snout, while the offset and width keep the belt running straight with the oil pump and cam sprockets. Timing notches are your reference for belt alignment.

What happens if itโ€™s damaged โš ๏ธ

Worn or chipped teeth, a flogged keyway, or rust pitting can make the belt skip. You may get rough idle, misfire, backfire, poor fuel use, or a noโ€‘start. Severe slip can desync cams; on some engines this risks bent valves. Continued use can shred the belt and contaminate the cover with metal dust.

Service tips

Inspect at every belt job. Replace if teeth are hooked, the bore is loose, or marks are unreadable. Clean the crank, fit a fresh key, align marks, and torque the bolt to spec. If oil was present, renew the front crank seal.
