Engine Thrust Washer (Crankshaft End Play Spacer) βοΈ
This small but critical washer controls crankshaft end play inside the engine. It is needed to keep the crankshaft centered when the clutch/torque converter, belts, and combustion forces push the crank forward and backward. A correct thrust surface protects the block, bearings, and rotating assembly from unwanted rubbing.
How It Works ?
The washer sits at the thrust bearing location and provides a hardened, low-friction face. As the crankshaft tries to βwalkβ along its axis, the thrust surfaces take the load and keep clearance within spec. Proper oil film between the washer and crank helps prevent metal-to-metal contact.
What Happens If Itβs Worn or Broken β οΈ
If the thrust washer is damaged, crank end play grows. You may notice clutch/gear engagement issues, crank pulley wobble, scraping noises, or oil leaks. Continued driving can cause bearing failure, crank sensor misread, block scoring, and catastrophic engine damage.
