Engine Valve Lifter (Hydraulic Tappet) οΈ
This internal engine component is needed to keep the valve train quiet, accurate, and efficient. It maintains correct contact between the camshaft and the valves, helping the engine breathe properly at all speeds. When clearances are controlled, you get smoother idle, cleaner power delivery, and less wear on expensive parts.
How it works βοΈ
The lifter rides on the cam lobe and transfers motion to open and close the valves. In hydraulic designs, oil pressure fills a small chamber inside the lifter, automatically taking up lash (free play). This self-adjusting action reduces ticking noise, stabilizes valve timing, and protects the cam and rocker surfaces.
If itβs worn or broken
A failing lifter can cause tapping/knocking sounds, misfires, loss of power, rough idle, and increased fuel use. If ignored, it may damage the camshaft lobes, bend push/valve train parts, or lead to poor compression. In severe cases, metal debris can contaminate engine oil and accelerate overall engine wear.
