Engine Valve Lifter (Hydraulic Tappet)

This precision valve-train part keeps your engine running smooth by holding the correct clearance between the camshaft and the valves. It is needed to reduce ticking noise, improve valve timing accuracy, and protect the cam lobes and valve tips from wear ⚙️.

How It Works

Inside the lifter is a small oil chamber and check valve. When engine oil pressure builds, the lifter self-adjusts and takes up slack automatically. This keeps the valve opening and closing consistent across hot and cold starts, helping your engine breathe correctly and maintain stable power.

Signs of a Failing Lifter

If the lifter is worn or sticking, you may notice tapping/clicking noise, rough idle, misfire-like feeling, loss of power, and faster camshaft wear. Ignoring it can lead to damaged cam lobes, burnt valves, metal debris in the oil, and costly top-end repairs 🔧.

Why Replacing It Matters

A fresh lifter restores proper valve-train preload, quiet operation, and long-term reliability—especially important on turbo and high-load Subaru engines.
