Engine Valve Lifter (Hydraulic Tappet) for Subaru Boxer Engines ?
This valve lifter is a small but critical part inside the cylinder head. It is needed to keep the valve train working smoothly and to maintain correct valve clearance while the engine heats up and cools down. When clearance is right, the engine runs quieter, breathes better, and protects the camshaft and valves from shock wear.
How It Works ⚙️
The lifter sits between the camshaft and valve mechanism. It uses engine oil pressure to “self-adjust,” taking up tiny gaps automatically. This creates steady contact, reduces ticking noise, and helps the cam lobe open the valve with accurate timing and lift.
When Replacement Is Necessary ?
If the lifter is worn, clogged with sludge, or loses oil pressure, it can collapse or stick. This leads to noisy tapping, rough idle, misfire-like symptoms, and reduced power. In severe cases, poor valve control can accelerate camshaft wear, damage valve train parts, and contaminate oil with metal debris.
Common Signs of a Failing Lifter
- Cold start ticking that doesn’t go away
- Uneven engine sound and vibration
- Loss of response at higher RPM
- Increased wear in cam/rocker area
