Engine Valve Lifter (Hydraulic Tappet)

This precision valve-train part keeps your Subaru engine running smooth by maintaining correct valve clearance between the camshaft and the valves. It is needed to reduce ticking noise, improve idle quality, and help the engine breathe efficiently under load .

How It Works

Inside the lifter is a small oil chamber and check valve. Engine oil pressure fills the chamber and automatically takes up tiny gaps in the valve train. As the cam lobe presses down, the lifter transfers the motion to open the valve, then returns to position while staying tight and quiet.

What Happens If It Fails

A worn or stuck lifter may cause loud tapping, misfire-like vibration, loss of power, rough idle, and reduced fuel economy. In severe cases it can accelerate camshaft wear, damage valve tips, and contaminate oil with metal particles—turning a small fix into an expensive top-end repair ⚠️.

When to Replace

Replace if noise persists after fresh oil, correct viscosity, and proper oil pressure checks. Best practice is to inspect related components and use clean oil to prevent repeat failure.
