This internal engine component is essential because it converts combustion pressure into useful mechanical force. Inside the cylinder, it moves up and down, sealing against the bore with piston rings and guiding the energy of the air-fuel explosion to the connecting rod and crankshaft. When clearances and ring sealing are correct, you get strong compression, smooth power, and controlled oil use.

During the intake and compression strokes, it draws in and squeezes the mixture. On the power stroke, expanding gases push it downward, turning the crankshaft. Its shape helps manage heat and directs loads evenly, while the ring lands support the rings for tight sealing and stable oil control.
What Happens If Itβs Worn or Damaged β
A cracked or scuffed unit can cause knocking, low compression, misfires, heavy oil burning, blow-by, and blue smoke. In severe cases it may score the cylinder wall, damage rings, overheat the bore, and lead to catastrophic engine failure.
