Engine Rod Bearing Shells

These precision shells sit between the connecting rod and the crank journal. They set the oil clearance, cut friction, and protect the crank from wear. In hard‑working SUVs and refined sedans alike, correct bearings keep idle smooth, knock away, and power delivery clean. Fresh, accurate shells are vital for long engine life and stable oil pressure.

How it works ⚙️

Two half‑shells with a steel backing and soft overlay cradle the journal. Pressurized oil enters the rod, forming a hydrodynamic film that floats the rod on the crank. Proper clearance lets oil flow, cool, and support load. With clean oil and correct torque, the shells keep the rod aligned, reducing heat and micro‑weld wear, even at high RPM and heavy load.

What if it fails ❗

Worn or damaged shells cause rod knock on cold start, low oil pressure, and glitter in the sump. Continued use can score the crank, overheat the journal, or spin a shell. A spun bearing often means sudden loud knock, pressure drop, and possible seizure—leading to costly crank regrind or full engine rebuild.

Tech tips for install ️

Measure journal size and roundness, clean oil passages, and verify clearance with Plastigage. Align tangs, match caps, oil holes, and use assembly lube. Torque rod bolts to spec and prime the oil system before first start for a safe hydrodynamic film on kickoff.
