Crankshaft Timing Sprocket βš™οΈ

This precision sprocket sits on the crankshaft nose and is a key part of the engine timing drive. It is needed to transfer crankshaft rotation to the timing chain/belt system so the camshaft(s) open and close valves at the correct moment. Without accurate timing, even a healthy engine can run poorly or not run at all.

How It Works ?

The sprocket’s teeth mesh with the timing chain (or engage the belt system via the proper drive path). As the crankshaft spins, the sprocket keeps a fixed mechanical relationship between crank and cam. A good sprocket holds tooth shape, alignment, and fitment on the crank, preventing timing drift under load.

Why Replacing a Worn One Matters βœ…

If the sprocket is worn, cracked, or the keyway/fit becomes loose, the chain can ride poorly and timing can shift. Common results include hard starting, rough idle, loss of power, rattling timing noise, and increased fuel use. In severe cases, the chain may skip teeth, risking valve-to-piston contact and major engine damage.

Symptoms of Failure ?

  • Timing chain noise on cold start
  • Misfire or unstable idle
  • Sluggish acceleration
  • Check engine light for timing correlation
