Why you need it
Rings keep pressure where it belongs, prevent oil from burning, and stabilize temperature. Fresh rings bring back torque, clean idle, easier starts, and reduced emissions.
How it works ⚙️
The top ring locks in combustion during the power stroke. The second aids sealing and scrapes gases. The three‑piece oil control ring meters a thin film; its expander sets tension so oil is returned through drain holes. Correct end gaps and side clearance let rings flex and seal as parts expand.
If worn or broken
Blue smoke, high oil use, low compression, blow‑by, rough starts, and fouled plugs appear. Extended driving can score cylinders, glaze walls, and overheat the catalyst. A snapped ring can gouge the bore and demand a full rebuild.
Tech notes ️
Measure bore, deglaze/hone, clean grooves, check end gap in multiple spots, stagger gaps ~120°, oil lightly on install, face markings up, and torque to spec.
