    Nissan Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve (PCV)

    The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve is a crucial component in your vehicle's engine. Serving as a vital part of the emission control system, the PCV valve captures unburned fuel and harmful gases that escape from the engine's crankcase. By rerouting these gases back into the combustion chamber, it helps reduce emissions, improves fuel efficiency, and prolongs engine life.

    Why the PCV Valve is Needed

    Engines naturally produce gases as a byproduct of combustion. Without a properly functioning PCV valve, these gases would be released into the atmosphere, increasing pollution. Moreover, the buildup of these gases can create pressure within the engine's crankcase, leading to oil leaks, seal damage, and a reduction in engine performance.

    How the PCV Valve Works

    The PCV valve operates simply but effectively. When the engine is running, it opens to allow the escape of gases. It also ensures that these gases are drawn into the intake manifold and redirected back into the engine, where they are burnt off. This cycle is continual while the engine operates, ensuring that gases are not released into the environment but rather used in a beneficial manner.

    What Happens if the PCV Valve is Broken

    If the PCV valve fails, the engine may run inefficiently, and emissions increase. Common signs of a faulty PCV valve include: an illuminated check engine light, rough idling, increased oil consumption, and decreased fuel economy. If left unchecked, a broken PCV valve can cause severe engine damage.
