Upper Crankshaft Thrust Washer
This small but critical engine washer controls crankshaft end play (front-to-back movement) inside the block. It is needed to keep the crankshaft centered when the clutch or torque converter pushes on the crank during driving and shifting. β
How It Works
The washer sits at the thrust surface of the main bearing area and provides a smooth, wear-resistant face for the crankshaft to ride against. As the crank tries to move lengthwise, the washer absorbs the load and prevents metal-to-metal grinding. It also helps keep oil film stable around the thrust face for cooler, quieter operation. π§
Signs the Part Is Worn or Broken
