Upper crankshaft thrust washer
This small precision washer is vital for keeping the crankshaft correctly positioned front-to-back inside the engine block π οΈ. It is used where the crankshaft needs a controlled βend playβ limit, especially during clutch/torque converter load and when the transmission pushes on the crank.
Why this part is needed
The crankshaft must spin freely, but it also must not slide sideways. This washer provides a smooth, hardened contact surface so the crank can rotate while resisting axial movement.
How it works
Installed at the thrust bearing area, the upper washer rides against the crankshaft thrust face. Engine oil creates a thin film to reduce friction and heat, preventing metal-to-metal scuffing under load βοΈ.
What happens if itβs worn or broken
Excess crankshaft end play can cause knocking, clutch/torque converter issues, unstable ignition timing signals, oil seal leaks, and rapid bearing damage. In severe cases, the crank can grind the block or seize, leading to major engine failure π.
