This engine bearing is a precision-fit support shell that sits between the crankshaft journal and the engine block. It is needed to keep the crankshaft perfectly aligned while it spins under heavy load. Without a healthy bearing surface, the crankshaft cannot ride on a stable oil film, and engine noise and vibration quickly increase.
How It Works ⚙️
The bearing’s soft metal layer is designed to hold a thin cushion of pressurized engine oil. This “oil wedge” reduces friction, controls heat, and prevents metal-to-metal contact at idle, cruising, and high RPM. Proper clearances help maintain oil pressure and protect the crank journals from scoring.
What Happens If It Fails ?
A worn or spun bearing can cause low oil pressure, knocking sounds, glittery metal in the oil, and overheating at the crank. If ignored, it may seize the crankshaft, damage the block, and lead to full engine rebuild or replacement.
