Timing Chain Tensioner for Mitsubishi Engines
This component keeps the timing chain at the correct tightness so the crankshaft and camshafts stay perfectly synchronized. It is needed because the chain naturally stretches over time, and engine heat plus vibration can let it whip or slack if not controlled.
How It Works ⚙️
The tensioner uses spring force and engine oil pressure to push a plunger against the chain guide. As the chain wears, the plunger steps out to maintain steady tension. This helps protect timing accuracy, reduces chain noise, and supports smooth starting and stable idle.
If It Fails
A weak or stuck unit can cause rattling on cold start, rough running, loss of power, and timing drift. In severe cases the chain may jump teeth, leading to misfires and possible internal engine damage. Replacing it in time prevents expensive repairs and keeps valve timing safe.
