Rear Main Seal Carrier – Keep the crankcase sealed

This precision housing mounts at the back of the engine block around the crankshaft flange. Its job is to locate and clamp the rear main oil seal so engine oil stays in and dust stays out. The rigid body prevents seal distortion, keeps perfect concentricity, and acts as a splash shield against oil churn from the flywheel/flexplate area.

Why it’s needed ️

Without a true, aligned seat, the rear main seal cannot hold pressure or runout. This carrier provides flatness, bolt preload, and sealing grooves for RTV or a gasket, creating a durable, leak-free joint between block and oil pan rail.

How it works βš™οΈ

Dowels and bolt pattern center the housing; the lip seal is pressed squarely onto the crank journal. The carrier’s machined face and seal pocket control crush and depth, reducing wear and heat. Coated metal resists corrosion and fretting.

When it fails

Cracks, warpage, or loose hardware misalign the seal, causing oil drip at the bellhousing, burning smell, oily starter, clutch slip (MT) or mess on the flexplate (AT). Continued leaks risk low oil, bearing damage, and contaminated mounts. Replace with the seal and gasket; clean surfaces, apply correct RTV bead, and torque in sequence.
