Engine Cam Timing Gear ⚙️
This precision cam timing gear is a key part of the valve timing system. It is needed to keep the camshaft synchronized with the crankshaft so the engine breathes correctly at every RPM. When timing is accurate, you get smooth idle, strong pull, and clean fuel burn. ✅
How It Works
The gear mounts on the camshaft and meshes with the timing drive (belt/chain system depending on engine). As the crankshaft turns, the timing drive rotates this gear, which rotates the camshaft. That motion opens and closes the valves at the exact moment the pistons move up and down, preventing misfire and keeping compression stable.
If It Fails
A worn or damaged gear can cause timing drift, ticking noises, rough running, loss of power, poor fuel economy, and hard starting. In severe cases it may skip timing, risking valve-to-piston contact on interference engines—leading to bent valves and costly cylinder head repairs.
