This internal lubrication part is needed to keep engine oil flowing cleanly and in the correct direction, especially during cold starts and rapid RPM changes. It helps protect bearings, timing components, and turbo-equipped systems (if fitted) from oil starvation.
How it works ✅
Oil is drawn from the sump through a fine pickup screen that traps sludge and metal particles before they reach the pump. A built-in check valve helps hold prime in the oil circuit, reducing drain-back when the engine is off. This supports quicker oil pressure build-up on start-up and steadier pressure during hard cornering or braking.
What happens if it’s broken or clogged ⚠️
A damaged screen or leaking check valve can cause delayed oil pressure, ticking lifters, warning lights, and accelerated wear. In severe cases, the pump can cavitate, leading to scoring of crank journals, chain/tensioner failure, or catastrophic engine seizure.
