Crankshaft Drive Pulley (Engine Harmonic Pulley)
This pulley sits on the front of the crankshaft and transfers engine rotation to the accessory belts. It is needed to keep the alternator, A/C compressor, power steering (if fitted) and water pump working together with steady belt speed. Many designs also act as a vibration damper, helping reduce crankshaft twist at idle and under load .
How It Works
The pulley is keyed/bolted to the crankshaft nose. As the crank spins, the pulley grooves drive the belt. On damped types, a bonded rubber layer absorbs torsional vibration, protecting bearings and improving smooth running.
Signs of Failure
- Belt squeal, wobble or repeated belt wear
- Charging light, weak A/C, heavy steering feel
- Vibration at idle, knocking near the crank area
If You Keep Driving With a Broken Pulley
A cracked or delaminated pulley can throw the belt, leading to overheating, loss of charging, and possible engine damage. In severe cases it can damage the crankshaft nose or front oil seal, causing oil leaks and bigger repair costs ⚠️.
