Crankshaft Center Bolt (Engine Pulley/Main Bolt)

This high-tension engine fastener locks the crank pulley/harmonic balancer tightly to the crankshaft nose. It is needed to keep perfect alignment between the crankshaft, timing reference, and accessory drive system. When installed and torqued to spec, it holds clamping force even under sudden acceleration, engine braking, and vibration ?.

How it works

The bolt threads into the crankshaft and applies a precise stretch (clamp load). That clamp load prevents pulley movement, keeps the keyway from fretting, and helps the damper absorb torsional vibration. A correct fit and torque sequence are critical; many engines treat this as a one-time-use β€œtorque-to-yield” style fastener.

Why this part matters

  • Maintains stable pulley seating and belt tracking
  • Protects crank snout, keyway, and damper surfaces
  • Reduces vibration and noise from the front of the engine
  • Supports accurate timing signals on engines with trigger wheels

If it’s loose or broken

A weakened or snapped bolt can let the pulley wobble, shred belts, cause charging/overheating issues, and damage the crankshaft nose. In severe cases, the damper can slip, creating misfires, harsh vibration, or complete no-start. Continued driving may turn a simple repair into an engine-front rebuild ⚠️.
