This precision main bearing supports the crankshaft in the engine block, keeping it centered and spinning smoothly on a thin pressurized oil film. How it works ⚙️
Two half-shells sit in the block and bedplate/cap. With correct clearance, oil forms a hydrodynamic wedge that prevents metal-to-metal contact. The layered surface (steel/back, intermediate layer, soft overlay) absorbs debris and supports high loads. Correct grade selection and clean installation are vital.
What happens if it’s bad
Symptoms include cold-start knock, hot-idle low pressure, metallic glitter in oil, and rising temps. Continued use can spin a bearing, score the crank, drop oil pressure to zero, and seize the engine—often needing a full rebuild or replacement crankshaft.
