This steering column contact unit is needed to keep electrical signals flowing between the fixed wiring and the rotating steering wheel. It supports key systems like the driver airbag circuit, horn, and steering wheel buttons. Without it, modern safety and comfort features can’t communicate correctly while you turn the wheel.

How It Works ⚙️

Inside the housing, a flat ribbon cable is coiled like a spring. As the wheel turns left and right, the ribbon winds and unwinds smoothly, maintaining continuous contact without twisting or breaking. This design keeps voltage and signal lines stable through every steering movement.

Signs of Failure & What Happens If It Breaks ?

• Airbag warning light on the dashboard
• Horn stops working or works only sometimes
• Steering wheel buttons become intermittent
• Clicking/rubbing noise when turning the wheel

If the unit fails completely, the driver airbag circuit may be interrupted, increasing risk in a collision. Continued driving with faults can also trigger diagnostic codes and cause random electrical dropouts in the wheel controls.
