Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor for Honda
Why this part is needed
This sensor feeds the engine computer precise coolant temperature. The ECU uses that data to set fuel mix, ignition timing, idle speed, radiator fan operation, and on diesel models, glow plug and regeneration logic. Accurate readings mean clean cold starts, quick warm-up, steady power, and safe engine protection. Ideal fix for erratic gauge, poor mpg, or hard starting. Keywords: Honda coolant temperature sensor, ECT sensor Civic, CR‑V, FR‑V, Edix
How it works
Inside is an NTC thermistor bathed by coolant. As temperature rises, resistance drops. With a 5 V reference, the ECU interprets the return voltage as °C. It then trims fueling, controls fan relays, manages A/C load, EGR, and diesel DPF functions. The sealed brass tip and washer/O‑ring keep coolant contained and resist corrosion for long service life.
What happens if it’s broken
Expect hard cold starts, rich mixture, black smoke, rough idle, poor fuel economy, fan stuck on/off, wrong dash reading, overheating risk, or limp mode. Common codes: P0115–P0119. Driving with a bad sensor can foul plugs, harm the catalyst/DPF, and raise emissions.
Fitment tips ️
Usually near the thermostat housing. Replace on a cold engine, catch coolant, renew the seal, torque correctly, bleed air, and clear fault codes after installation.
