This transmission gear is required to engage reverse motion in a manual gearbox. As you select reverse, the gear train meshes through the reverse arrangement to flip shaft rotation. The tooth profile and hardening are designed to handle sudden torque at low speed, especially during parking maneuvers and hill starts.
