Neutral Position Switch for Subaru Manual Gearboxes ⚙️

This small sensor tells the ECU when the shifter is in neutral. It’s needed for smooth idle control, safe starting, cruise cancel, and proper fuel cut on decel. When the ECU knows the box is in neutral, it stabilizes RPM, reduces stalling, and trims emissions—especially during stop‑and‑go city driving.

How it works

A threaded body with a spring‑loaded plunger sits on the transmission case. When the selector rail moves to neutral, the plunger changes an on/off circuit. The ECU reads that clean signal to manage idle speed, timing, and cruise logic. A sealed tip and crush washer keep gear oil inside.

What happens if it fails

• Check Engine Light (often P0851/P0852)
• High or hunting idle after shifting to neutral
• Random stalling when stopping
• Cruise control won’t set or drops out
• Must press clutch to start even in neutral
• Poor fuel economy and rev‑hang on decel

Install notes

Direct screw‑in, 2‑pin plug, replace the crush washer. Torque about 25–30 Nm. Verify continuity: closed only in neutral. Oil‑ and heat‑resistant build for long life.
