Crankshaft Position Sensor for Reliable BMW Engine Timing βοΈ
This sensor is a key input for the engine control unit. It tells the ECU exactly where the crankshaft is and how fast it spins, so ignition timing and fuel injection happen at the right moment. Without a clean crank signal, even a perfectly healthy engine can act like it has fuel or spark problems.
Why this part is needed ?
Modern BMW engines depend on precise crankshaft speed and position data for smooth starting, stable idle, strong acceleration, and correct gearbox/traction logic. The sensor helps the ECU synchronize spark and injection pulses to each cylinder.
How it works ?
The sensor reads a toothed wheel on the crankshaft. As teeth pass the sensor tip, it creates an electrical signal. The ECU converts this signal into RPM and exact crank angle, then adjusts ignition, injection, and misfire detection in real time.
What happens if it fails ?
- Hard start or no start
- Engine stalling when hot
- Rough idle, hesitation, loss of power
- Check Engine light and fault codes
- Misfire-like symptoms and poor fuel economy
A weak or intermittent sensor can cause random cut-outs that feel like a fuel pump issue. Replacing it restores stable timing signals and protects the catalytic converter from unburned fuel.
