How it works ⚙️

Inside is a hardened body, plunger, spring, and a tiny check valve. Pressurized engine oil fills the plunger, taking up clearance automatically. The designed leak‑down rate maintains zero lash across temperature changes and RPM, keeping the valve timing precise.

What happens if it fails ⚠️

Symptoms include cold or hot ticking, rough idle, misfire, and power loss. A collapsed unit won’t open the valve fully; a pumped‑up unit can hold a valve open causing backfire, high HC, and catalyst damage. Long-term neglect risks cam lobe scuffing and metal in oil.
